Food is what can bring friends and family together, whether it’s for a party, holiday, or a family reunion, food is always present. Food can make us feel happy or can make our day better if we are having a bad day, it can do this because we always associate food with happiness. Food is basically a social network because it can bring people together and make them have good feelings with whatever the occasion is.
For me, food does make me happy, but it also makes me feel creative. When I cook I try and mix two different types of food together that normally are two different dishes. I like to do this because I know that the two dishes make people happy and feel good, then putting them together should do the same thing.
One of my favorite dishes to make is a twist on Mexican and American. This is dish is called a Mexican Hamburger. I first got this idea from a small-hole in the wall- restaurant called Chubby’s Mexican Food. What they would do is take a tortilla with a patty of beef, then slice the patty in half and lay it in the tortilla, and then add refried beans, cheese, and green chili. I liked this dish so much that it became the only thing that I would ever eat there. I thought it was perfect how it was, until I wanted to make it and put my own twist on this dish.
I started with the basics; tortilla, beef patty, refried beans, and green chili. It wasn’t until I had all the ingredients in front of me that I realized that this dish was too simple. I figured it needed more to go with it more….American.
Once I had the basic ingredients I began to think about a normal burrito and a normal hamburger as separates. When I had created my new dish in my head I began to make my own Mexican hamburger! I began with the tortilla and sliced the beef patty, then laid it in the tortilla and put the refried beans on top. Then instead of wrapping it up like a traditional Mexican hamburger, I decided to put shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and jalapenos in with the patty, and then wrapped it up. Now that I had MY Mexican hamburger I smothered it in chili and cheese with a dash of Tabasco. Then I thought to myself “I can make this even better!” so looking at my almost finished product I rattled my brain with ideas on how to complete my dish. After a few minutes of thinking about it, it finally came to me…. Cut it in two and put it in a bun!
Now you can imagine that this is quite a large meal and it is so I encourage it if you are that hungry. After my family tried my new dish they all said it was a great way to twist two dishes together and that it made them feel full and satisfied along with happy too. I’m glad I was able to take a favorite meal of mine and make it my way and to me even better. Food is great but it can also be fun and creative!
