Amanda's Food Blog Final
Live To Eat (Final)

When I was growing up I remember going to massive family gatherings where, now that I think about it, there really was no reason to get together but to eat a bunch of food and spend time with family. But why did it always have to revolve around food? Why is it always a family picnic or a family dinner? Why can’t we just have a family gathering, play games and reminisce, without it having to be all about food? I think it’s because eating is the best way we know of finding common ground with people. Everyone eats food, it's something that nobody will feel left out on. But it is not necessary for us to eat at these gatherings, we will not starve to death if we didn’t eat. But food brings people together and gives us a common social environment.
We use food to set the environment of a party or a gathering. We use it to even set the mood when we go on a date. When a guy asks a girl on a date, most of the time it is to dinner or to food at least. But you take her to a fancy restaurant not because you need to eat or you would just take her home and make some sandwiches, it's because you want to spend time with her in a nice environment and what better place than somewhere that you can eat seeing as it's something you both enjoy? Something you both automatically have in common. It’s the ultimate ice-breaker. And even later in the relationship when the man purposes to the girl at the fancy restaurant, he didn’t ask her there because he was starving and needed to eat, it was because it’s a social place where they both can feel comfortable. Later they will serve a big feast at the wedding, and have their own family gatherings which revolve around food.
Sometimes we don’t even use eating as a way to break the ice or to set the mood, but we use it simply to pass the time. Every time I go to the movie theatre I always buy popcorn. I never buy it because I’m hungry, just so that I have something to do while I enjoy the movie. When I go to amusement parks or carnivals I buy snacks to eat while I wait in lines or while I navigate my way through the place. At sporting events people go around selling hot dogs, nachos, small personal pizzas, cotton candy, and Dippin' Dots to name a few snacks, and people buy them like they are going to die without it. When I go to the sports bars I usually get some kind of food to go with the beer. Even when we do go out to eat, we usually order appetizers, a food to eat while you wait for your food to get there.
If we only ate to keep ourselves alive, we would probably not care what we ate and how it tasted, but we do. We have tons of different restaurants, fast food places, food stands, and grocery stores with hundreds of different options of things to eat. We can eat whatever we want, whenever we want. We even have certain foods for special social occasions. We make a special cake that’s only for weddings, and on thanksgiving we mostly all eat turkey, and we even have a certain group of foods we usually only eat for breakfast.
Speaking of Thanksgiving, that’s a whole holiday we devote to eating. Every year my family comes to my moms’ house and eats till they fall asleep. We always have at least one turkey, and huge sides like mashed potatoes, stuffing, corn, chili, and all kinds of other good stuff. But the main reason we make all that food is so we can get together with people we love and reconnect. Spending time with people you might not see everyday is a lot easier when you are eating for some reason. Every holiday is pretty much the same format too; we make a big feast and celebrate by eating. Food is a great American pass-time.
We even have entire T.V. channels devoted to food and eating. Like the Man Versus Food show, there are many other shows where the only point is to entertain us. We can’t even smell the food, let alone eat it, but we still watch these shows as if we were going to eat the food on them. Sometimes they teach us how to prepare a certain dish so we can eat it at home, sometimes they just show us the strange stuff people eat around the world. Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern is all about the strange things folks around the world eat. All this to socialize and share with other people our own eating experiences.
From the television shows we watch to see how other people eat, to the movie popcorn we eat to keep ourselves busy during the movie, we use food for more than to sustain life. We use it to socialize with others and to have something to talk about. We use it to make people comfortable, and we use it to entertain people. Why do we eat? Because we can. We eat for a lot of reasons and most of them are not because we need to. To be honest every time I come to English class and we talk about food I leave hungry even if I have eaten before class. Talking about food makes people want to eat food, and eating food makes people want to talk. Food is as much a social experience as it is something we need to live

January 6

Food Essay Rough Draft
January 6
At the end of every year people are joyful, sad, frustrated and in a hurry; that would be because of the holidays. The reason why people get frustrated and are in a hurry is because some like to shop at the last minute for Christmas presents. My parents usually had everything ready for every important holyday. We usually celebrate every holyday but the only holydays really important to us would be Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and January 6. Those holydays are important because we like to cook and eat foods from different varieties. Christmas has become one of our favorite holydays but not the only one, the reason would be because that day we spent that day with all of our family members; it is a family reunion. Every year a different family member volunteers so we can go to that person’s house and celebrate Christmas. Every one brings different types of Mexican foods. What we usually see there is mole, pozole, tamales and different kinds of desserts and drinks but that is not the only food. That day to us is hardly about the gifts under the tree and more about eating and socializing. The younger children are the ones more preoccupied with the gifts rather than food.
My parents were born in Mexico and they did not celebrate Christmas like we do now, they celebrated it very differently when they were children. Both of my parent’s families were poor when they were kids. My father had fourteen brothers and sisters which my grandmother had to take care of herself because my grandfather died. He was an alcoholic and died because he drank too much. My father did not really like to talk about his family a lot. My mother had four brothers and four sisters which would later become a total of seven brothers and six sisters. My grandfather remarried, that is where the other five children come from. The reason why he remarried was not because he got divorced but because my grandmother had died giving birth to a baby girl that also died. When my grandmother passed away my mom was six-teen, she was the fifth child. My grandfather had lots of mouths to feed so all the first five of his children that where over six-teen (which would include my mom) dropped out of school if not graduated
already and went to work at a factory.
To them Christmas was not as jolly as they would want it to be. They knew they were going to hardly get any presents from their father because he could not afford it. So they told my grandfather to not waste money on gifts and buy food they needed instead. That day was like an ordinary day now and besides they preferred to wait to celebrate on January 6. The older children knew how to cook so they helped their stepmom every holyday. The only day they knew they were going to get presents that was not in their birthday was on January 6. That day is significant because that is when the three wise men gave baby Jesus gifts.
The tradition there is that your godparents give you presents on that day. My mom liked that day because they got a present that was not bought with their fathers money. They had a big feast and the significant food on that day was and is bread. It is not just any kind of bread it is called rosca de reyes; they only bake it and sell it on that day. It is hard to describe how the bread looks like but it is a large oval with no center like a donut. The bread has liquorish and other sweet things on the top; also it has a two inch plastic baby doll inside it. The reason they do that is because everyone has to take a slice of bread and whoever gets the doll has to throw a party. I lived in Mexico for five years and I remember celebrating that day and having lots of fun.
Even though we celebrate Christmas more now we still get that bread each year on January 6 by mail. The food we eat brings different memories to each of my brothers and me. Some bring joy and others sadness but for me eating that slice of bread reminds me of those few years I lived in Mexico. The only and last year’s we would spend as a happy and whole family before our father would leave our mom to be alone. Even though he barely calls my brothers and I because he is too busy working, he sends us the bread year. Some years I do not feel like eating it because of the memories it brings at first but then I remember other happy moments and how fun that day was that I do. And also because I know he is going to call at night and I have to have an answer to, “Te gusto el pan mi hijo.” Which translates to, “Did you enjoy the bread my son."

Emily Kanagy's food essay rough draft

Food essay
My dad has always been the out doorsy type, he lives for every possible Colorado sport known to man and turned me onto several of them. The divorce agreement stated i was to visit him every other weekend and eat dinner every Wednesday. Eventually that schedule faded with my increasing social life and his increasing distance, town by town, my farther moved further away from me. Not to get away from me but for job necessity and marriage choices. Irregardless he has always tried to instill his love for hiking, mountain biking, rafting, kayaking, rock climbing and skiing (in my case snowboarding) into me. When i was young i only liked walking in meadows or taking an easy bike ride. For the past 8 or 9 years he have lived in Buena Vista. Ever since he moved to Buena Vista my liking for his adventurous activities and the patterns that developed from them changed both my view on many out doors activities and bond with my dad.
At first i hated it and thought i would never have fun with my dad in a one stop light town. My dad took me to do Colorado sports like mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, rafting. In my freshman year of high school my dad took me snowboarding for the first time. by sophomore year i was going ever weekend. Snowboarding became a new passion and challenge for me. I started to see the beauty of the location once my eyes were open to the adventures to be had. While i still enjoy all the spring and summer sports, it wasn't until i found snowboarding that i felt like going out of my way to participate. I would either, go see my dad at copper while he works and ride with friends (being from evergreen, snowboarders are their own group) or going home with him to eat and relax. Weather it was after snowboarding or rafting, what we ate and drank when we went home to relax added routine to the rarity of our time together. Mexican burritos from a “ Roach Coach” in Leadvil are a must at least one of the nights i stay with my dad. A hispanic couple and their kids (possibly hoped the boarder) run it. It is a small trailer with “lo mejer en comida” written on it, or “the best in food.” It is called “the roach coach” in Leadvil and surrounding towns and has the tastiest burritos and freshest green chili i have ever tasted.
Most tourists are afraid to even stop there, but the locals know the quality and authenticity. My Dad, Stepmom and I always get the same thing, three barbaqoa burritos ( one no onion) and a side of green chili to go. The seasonings on the shredded beef that fills the inside of the burrito is so flavorful and the beans complement it wonderfully. The green chili is mouth watering! All the peppers are grown in the owners garden 5 minutes away from location. Nothing comes out of a can, (apparently that would be an insult to real mexican cuisine). I could drink the green chili if wanted, but i prefer to put it on any food i can come up for it to be good with. My dad eats there all the time, but for me, “Roach Coach” is a rare treat. The winter time, during snow boarding season, is when i most often get to indulge on this wonderful meal.
Ever since the freshman year of high school my dad has worked for Copper Mountain Ski Resort and i have been able to get a free season pass. It created a way for me to enjoy my new passion without paying an arm and a leg. Finally there was something my dad and i could both love, pass time with together, provide opportunity for me to stay at his house and satisfy my social life. Being from Evergreen, up in the mountains, most of the people i grew up with hit the slopes at least a couple times each year. It was easy to find someone to ride with me on the days I was there and my dad was working. Also my dad could get some good deals. As many weekends as i could i would go to copper Friday evening or Saturday morning to inevitably stay at my dads. Once by dad was off work I would go to his house for the night. (friend in toe or not). Our routine from the time we leave copper till i go home is the same every time.
From Copper to Buena Vista you go over Independence Pass and through Leadvil. Once my Dad and I leave Copper he calls in our order to the roach coach. Each time he says “Hey! This is Don from Copper calling, we need three barbaqoa burritos, one with no onion and a side of green chili to go. Okaaayy, grasias see you soon, bye”. We pick up dinner and arrive home at my dads house at the base of Mt. Prenston, Harvard and Yale. My Stepmom is home, hungry and waiting. I get my stuff and the eccentric dogs happy to see me settled. While i warm up the Burritos and chili, my dad mixes some of the best margaritas i have tried. We sit, eat, talk about what ever stupid topic my stepmom wants to gripe about or nit- pick at. Luckily she goes to bed after dinner, so bringing food home got her out of our hair faster. Once dinner is cleaned up my dad and i refresh our drinks and head to his hot tub. It is beautiful and relaxing out there. You can see the colligeante peaks against the sky and the snow glowing in moon light. The amount of visible stars is breath taking and the air is fresh and crisp. Its located in a corner against the back of the house which blocks most wind. My dad and I pass the time talking and watching the constellations slip across the sky. The fact that he and I have drank a margarita or two since i was 16 made me trust my dad with the things i hid from my mom. My mom has never even gotten drunk. Once we are all pruney we head inside to watch what ever is on comedy central. I lay on the couch and watch with my dad until sleep over comes him. then I myself am off to bed. The rarity of our time, of me getting Roach Coach, of our routine that serves as structure to my time in his home, and the chance to see the immense amount of starts, wouldn't be the same without our Mexican food and drinks
If we didn’t go to roach coach or indulge in margaritas i would still go to my dads, but it wouldn't be the same, nor would i have the memories tied to those tastes. The routine it creates makes me feel more at home at my dads house and less intimidated by and hateful towards my stepmother. Also not coming home with dinner and having to make it means more of our night tip toeing around my stepmother and less time enjoying each other. The fact that my dad drinks, let alone lets me drink, is the opposite of my life at my moms house. Its a nice break, makes me feel more open with my dad and like he and i have an understanding. He knows that kids my age, drink, smoke and party and he is open to the fact that i do. Therefore i feel like i can trust him with more details of my life. Even though as i was growing up were didn’t spend much time together now we can bond with a mature, understanding relationship. For the rest of my life i will associate good margaritas ( my dads are the best ) and good green chili with my times spent with my dad. That must be why a barbaqoa burrito, green chili and a margarita is my favorite meal.
"Reefer Madness" (rough)
A New Kind of Buffet (Rough Draft)

Smorgasbord is something that started in Scandinavia. The smorgasbord started gaining popularity in the mid 1600’s and became a regular meal for many Scandinavians. A true Scandinavian smorgasbord would have a variety of bread, butter and cheese. This is because one of the Scandinavians favorite dishes was the open faced sandwich. Americans started to adopt the smorgasbord after the 1939 World's Fair in New York. This was the first time the smorgasbord was seen in America. It has since been adopted in more of an American fashion to include more than just sandwiches.
Americans have certainly adopted the smorgasbord to fit into a more American style of eating. The original Scandinavian smorgasbords were rarely a way to refer to their buffets, however Americans have adopted this word to describe something that has a variety of cold and warm dishes. Even the roots of the word show that Americans are misusing the word. Smorgas means sandwich and bord means table, and certainly Americans, including my family have changed it from just a sandwich table.
The reason that smorgasbord Friday was one of my favorite days was because I could eat almost anything we had had previously in the week. It was like I could get the best of the week and that really appealed to a hungry ten year old. I remember eating spaghetti with mashed potatoes and ribs, it was really quite fantastic. This tradition has since died out in my family since my brothers have moved out and there really isn’t any need for such a huge meal every Friday night.
Smorgasbords have been around for a very long time. Coming from Scandinavia they have quickly been adapted into American culture today. They came to America froma fair in New York City all the way to my home on Friday nights. This meal tradition will certainly be an interesting tradition to watch develop in today’s American society.

The Necessity of Food (Rough Draft)
My current activities and general pattern latley involse things of a college student. While most people think of college as a party the reality(at least for me) is late nights and early morning and coffee is just the thing that solve my energy problems. A meduim roast coffee bean brewed fresh with a pinch of sugar and im on my way. Coffee only goes so far though and then comes the shakes which is easily fixed with a lunch of some sort. I say of some sort because yesterday i ate chicken salad, nothing else, just the chicken salad. Thats usually how it has been going lately for a lunch, something quick and then im onto other things. Dinner that night was a real meal though, a classic, steak and potaoes with cheesy vegetables. Thats an exapmle of my current eating habits but it hasnt always been this erratic.
-High school cross country running....where i fisrt starting eating with a purpose...spaghetti nights with cross country team before races.
-Army Basic training/ heat of Ft. Benning, Georgia/ Caffeteria...no soda...big meal/ MRE's/ tricks learned...crackers...."cake"...gatorade before sleep...candy on ruck marches/ how these teqniques carried over to iraq...rehydrating salts...hot...cold...mixed with gatorade powder.

-Summary- Like i said before I have the memories of my grandmothers cooking at the holiday dinners and the unique meals my father makes and the amazing restrauntes ive been toop in foriegn countries but what stands out most in my memery is the ways i use food to reach what ever goals i may be trying to acheive.
Summertime Meal (rough draft)
My mom ran to the store and picked up some flavorsome steak to enjoy with our fresh vegetables and fruit. While she was gone I started to make the salad. Spinach, lettuce, bell peppers, carrots, sweet peas, cucumbers, and some dried raspberries to top it off. My favorite kind of salad dressing is Red Wine Vinaigrette. It has sweet and kind of sour taste to it, but it's really good on steak and adds flavor. We also cooked baked potatoes and cut up fresh fruit for dessert.
After preparation was done it was time to sit down and enjoy our beautiful meal. It tasted so wonderful, I can still remember how juicy the steak was and how fresh the salad smelled. Being able to enjoy a good meal with my family outside on a warm summer evening is definitely one of my favorite things.
Now that I am older and my family has gone our separate ways, it is just my mom and I. At least a few times every summer we will make this delicious dinner and sit outside at the patio remembering the happy times we used to have. Three years ago we even started are own garden so we can have fresh vegetables whenever we want. Honestly steak and potatoes will always be my favorite food even if it is just my mom and I appreciating it.
Soul Food Sunday
Do you ever ask yourself, “How do I actually show my appreciation to my friends?” If so, cook a meal for them. In the late summer of 2005 I lived in sunny San Diego California, and had just served the 5th of 6 years that I owed the Navy. I had lived in the San Diego area for the past 4 years, but I only knew a couple of people because I had been living mostly on an aircraft carrier. The closest family member was my cousin who served in the Marines, but he lived 4 hours away and was always deployed. The people that I had spent 3½ years with on the ship and have got to know quite well were being stationed all over the United States. It felt like I was starting over at step one again. Little did I know helping out a friend would help a new and cultured family grow.
Night after night I would come home from work and make myself something easy and quick to eat. Although I had a kitchen full of delicious food I would make myself a turkey and cheese sandwich with maybe tomato and bell pepper on it, and then I would throw it on the George Foreman grill so I could feel like I am really treating myself. One night I was preparing a meal fit for a bachelor, and I get a call from my friend Fabian asking if him and his two boys, 5 and 9, could stay with me. I had no problem helping out a friend in need. Especially since I felt like I had nobody! We all lived together for 3 months before moving in to a bigger house that our mutual friend JB had been living in for a while.
We have all known each other for a couple of years before moving in together, but we really didn’t know much about each other. JB, who is Filipino, was 7 years older than me, but we shared the same style in clothes, like the same sports, and liked discovering new musicians or artist. Fabian, who is black, was 6 years older than me and had 2 handsome boys that stayed with us every other week. Fabian and I shared the same point of views on a lot of social subjects, and we coached and played sports together as well. Our diversity it is what made us such strong friends, almost family.
The three of us had one thing in particular in common, we felt that each one of us could handle ourselves in kitchen. We bragged about what our specialties were, but honestly we all had just one “go-to” dish that we could truly brag about. I was a pasta guy, JB could prepare meats like a champ, and Fabian had breakfast down to a science. In our down time when we weren’t out or broke, we would sort of compete in this big beautiful kitchen that had a common island in the middle of it.
Our bachelors pad contained 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a game room, with a beautiful view over the city and beaches of San Diego and its breath taking sunsets. This house was to be treated better than any frat house. Therefore we had parties, but for the most part they were under control. The 3 of us brought dates home all of the time, but for some reason never at the same time.
Shortly after moving in together in the lovely home in Mission Valley, a suburb of San Diego, we all had gotten to know each other and we all became friends with each others friends. We seemed to busy all week. During the week I would work out with Fabian, have lunch with JB’s friend Marian, watch the college basketball games that were on, and so on. Friday and Saturday night would come and our small group of 3 guys turned into 15 people looking to go to the bar, go to a concert, or go watch the padres play. Then Sunday we would all find our own way to recover and get ready for the next week.
One Sunday, while recovering, I started to reflect on the times before. The times where the people I knew left or were forced to go their own ways. I was a little depressed knowing that this would soon happen to my new family that I had just acquired. So I started thinking, and it didn’t hit me until later that week while at a friend’s restaurant. We all loved fine dining and felt that we had something to offer in the kitchen. That was when I came up with Soul Food Sunday. Since I felt that Sundays were being wasted away, I decided we must do something special every Sunday night. Between the 9 of us we had to prepare a home-cooked meal that had ourderves, a pre-meal ( soup or salad), the main course, and a dessert. All of this, of course, would be served with a classy beverage too. Whether it is wine, a mixed cocktail, or water, it had to be served in a nice glass. Every week people would volunteer an item of food or drink to Soul Food Sunday, and It had to be a different item each time. For example, if you made spaghetti for one meal, you could never make it again. You had to bring something different. If you only knew how to make one or two things you would have to pick something out of JB’s cookbook. Along with the great meal, you had to look great. No suits, or fancy dresses, but you had to dress as if you were going to a 4 star restaurant. The meals were always fantastic, even if they were a weird mix of foods, but what really made the tradition is the conversation about the week that had just past. The stories and jokes would get funnier as the night went along!
Soul food Sunday doesn’t happen anymore, but everyone talks to one another to keep up on their week. Even though most of us live in separate states it feels like we still have Soul Food Sunday over the phone.
A Good Source Of Protein
Since I could remember I’ve always liked chicken. I’m not too much of a meat eater so chicken is almost the only meat I eat. I had a couple of bad experiences with meat when I was younger. So the experiences I had affected the way I eat in a big way. I also eat a lot of chicken because I work out five days a week. So I try to eat it every day. Sometimes it’s hard though because you can only make chicken so many ways. It gets old eating the same thing every day.
When I was younger I used to eat any kind of meat. One day I was eating a steak and there was a vein in the meat. My dad cut the vein out but I was never the same. Now whenever I eat meat I can get grossed out by it very easy. I like the way pork, beef, and other types of meat taste. I just can’t get over the way some of it looks. Also the texture can gross me out. If it feels gross in my mouth that’s it I won’t be able to finish it. When I was younger I used to have my dad cut of the parts of the meat I didn’t like. As I got older I was just put off by meat more and more. So I just stopped eating meat. By cutting of the fat and other stuff I didn’t like, I felt I was wasting food. So I figured it would be better if I just stick to chicken. I like turkey and crispy bacon those are the only other types of meat that don’t bother me. I have ground beef sometimes in tacos but not to much.
I have to eat a lot of chicken to get a natural source of protein. Since I work out a lot protein shakes aren’t enough. Sometimes on Sunday I’ll cook enough chicken to last me all week. The only thing is leftovers don’t taste as good as a fresh cooked meal. So I don’t do that to often. I don’t have that much time to cook either. So I eat a lot of chicken pot pies. Plus I don’t like to cook so I don’t do it often. Not to say I can’t cook because I am a pretty good cook. Maybe one day I’ll get a girlfriend that likes to cook. So I’ll be able to eat the way I’m supposed to, instead of eating frozen dinners all the time.
When you work out a lot you should have chicken with every meal. But who wants to eat the same thing all the time? I probably eat chicken four or five times a week and I get tired of it. So I can’t imagine eating chicken every meal. So I really respect and admire the weight lifters that have chicken with every meal. My favorite type of chicken would have to be rotisserie chicken. That with mashed potatoes, corn bread, corn, and string beans is one of my favorite meals. No matter how you cook chicken it’s probably one of the healthiest meats you can eat. So luckily chicken don’t bother me cause how many vegetarian weight lifters do you know?

Live to Eat (Rough Draft)
When I was growing up I remember going to massive family gatherings where, now that I think about it, there really was no reason to get together but to eat a bunch of food and spend time with family. But why did it always have to revolve around food? Why is it always a family picnic or a family dinner? Why can’t we just have a family gathering without it having to be all about food? I think it’s because eating is the best way we know of finding common ground with people. Everyone eats food. Talking about food makes people want to eat food, and eating food makes people want to talk. Food is as much a social experience as it is something we need to live.

As a kid i was what i would consider poor, but i always had enough to eat. To me being poor was not having the type of snacks that i wanted or not having steak for dinner every week. Even then, as a kid, I was brain washed into thinking that food is a luxerie and needed to be consumed in great amounts, and the more expensive it was, the better it was. I rember feeling like i was getting cheated out of something special, becouse i wasnt going to MC Donalds every week.
A New Family (Rough Draft)
The appetizers of the dinner were mussels and garlic dip with crackers. The mussels, shellfish, were cooked in white wine, garlic, and butter. The garlic dip had a lot more in it than we thought and was served on wheat thins, multigrain crackers, and ista rupjmaize (one of the most popular dark rye breads of Latvia). The garlic dip was a mixture of garlic, yogurt, chives, bread crumbs, white wine, peppers, cream cheese, and more that we cannot remember. We never seem to eat the same thing twice because John never remembers what he puts in our meals. During this time, all the family members including my energetic great grandmother (Mary), Jan (I do not know that much about), Carol (John's mother), and my sister (Chrissy) were telling stories and talking about how beautiful the creek where the handfasting had been performed at. All but the family living in the house at the time did not notice what the decorations put up in the house looked like (the pentacle on the ceiling for example).
When we heard what the main course was going to taste amazing along with the Italian Bricco Riella Moscato D'Asti dessert wine that was being served throughout dinner. The main course was individually stuffed, baked chicken. Each piece of chicken was stuffed with spinach, onions, peppers, garlic, and Swiss or goat cheese. The sides were mashed potatoes and green beans. The mashed potatoes were peeled and mashed that day with garlic and butter mixed into it. The green beans were sauteed in olive oil and covered in garlic that had been chopped that day as well. We did not have dessert directly after the main course but more drinks were brought out just before dessert.
We had a variety of drinks during but mostly after the dinner. The Moscato D'Asti was served throughout the entire dinner but some people had White Russians and Apricot Schnapps. The drink that everyone had, the Latvian tradition that John showed us, was called a Niqualaska (not sure about the spelling) were you drink a shot of cognac and then suck on a sugar coated lemon. The closest name I could find to this drink was called a Downtown. The actual desserts consisted of german chocolate cookies (made by my sister) and multiple flavors of cheesecake from Cheesecake Therapy. We might have had more desserts but I cannot remember what they were.
This dinner and day seems to be my favorite because it was the only time when we could talk to our family without them trying to stab us in the back and actually enjoy their company for once. The people I live with are Neo-Pagan and Wiccan so it made the dinner even more enjoyable because there was not any religion restrictions like at the other weddings I've been to. Even now my family has these kind of meals frequently (minus the extra people). I still think back sometimes how that dinner had brought people of different religions together and how they actually got along even if there were not many of them.
Mexican or American? Rough Draft Steve Major
For me food does make me happy, but it also makes me feel creative. When I cook I try and mix two different types of food together that normally are two different dishes. I like to do this because when I know that the two dishes make people happy and feel good, then putting them together should do the same thing.
One of my favorite dishes to make is a twist on Mexican and American. This is dish is called a Mexican Hamburger. I first got this idea from a small-hole in the wall- restaurant called Chubby’s Mexican Food. What they would do is take a tortilla with a beef patty, slice the patty in half and lay it in the tortilla, and then add refried beans, cheese, and green chili. This I liked this dish so much that it became the only thing that I would ever eat there. I thought it was perfect how it was, until I wanted to make it and put my own twist on this dish.
I started with the basics; tortilla, beef patty, refried beans, and green chili. It wasn’t until I had all the ingredients in front of me that I realized that this dish was too simple. I figured it needed more to go with it more….American.
Once I had the basic ingredients I began to think about a normal burrito and a normal hamburger as separates. When I had created my new dish in my head I began to make my own Mexican hamburger! I began with the tortilla and sliced the beef patty, laid it in the tortilla and put the refried beans on top. Then instead of wrapping it up like a traditional Mexican hamburger, I decided to put shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and jalapenos in with the patty, and then wrapped it up. Now that I had MY Mexican hamburger I smothered it in chili and cheese with a dash of Tabasco. Then I thought to myself “I can make this even better!” so looking at my almost finished product I rattled my brain with ideas on how to complete my dish. After a few minutes of thinking about it, it finally came to me…. Cut it in two and put it in a bun!
Now you can imagine that this is quite a large meal and it is so I encourage it if you are that hungry. After my family tried my new dish they all said it was a great way to twist two dishes together and that it made them feel full and satisfied along with happy too. I’m glad I was able to take a favorite meal of mine and make it my way and to me even better. Food is great but it can also be fun and creative!

Family Ties ROUGH Draft
I remember when I was 5 years old when our family was sitting down at the dinner table deciding what should be included in the garden. We had to remember that we couldn't plant the entire garden selection because different plants need different living conditions. That day we started the cucumber seeds, we put the seeds in a damp towel and waited for them to germinate. In a few days we started the tomatoes, we started these plants differently, we planted them into a cup filled with dirt and soaked them with water.
We watched the seeds slowly morph into beautiful plants needing more and more tender loving care. They say if the more you talk to plants the better they thrive and thriving is what life is all about.
As the seeds grow into plants we started to treat them differently, slowly giving them more and more sun light.
As the sun starts to warm the ground up, we tend to the ground. Roto-tilling takes patience and hard work, just like raising a family.
Around mothers day, you plant this plants and put walls of water.
As the heat of the summer comes you take down this protective layer, exposing them to the harmful elements.
You notice the insects turning the flowers into fruits.
As the seasons start to change from the dog days into the cool days of fall, the vegetables have ripened.
Biting into a tomato explodes your taste buds, sending a jolt of flavor into your mouth.

Growing up I always Loved skiing in Keystone. From 4 to 13 years old I skied and 13 to 22 I have snowboarded. My parents would get my brothers and myself the 5 mountain ski pass every year it seemed like. last season I had the chance to get a Winter Park/Copper pass. I did not mind copper to much but I really did not like winter park! This season however I was not able to get a pass, as a pore college kid I can't afford it ha.

One place I've always wanted to visit is Pamakkale in Turkey. Located in Denizli Province, this little known wonder of the world contains travertines (a sedimentary rock) with beautiful clear-blue hot springs. These thermal pools surfaced thousands of years ago due to fractures created by earthquakes. The water is rich in calcium carbonate which mixes with the carbon dioxide in the air, and through some crazy process, the travertines that look like frozen white waterfalls came to be. The carbonate minerals in the water smooth your skin and probably possesses other therapeutic properties. Sounds like a good way to relax to me!

Today is February 15, 2011 in Lakewood, Colorado. The sun is shining and it is 66 degrees outside. Just a week ago the high was 7 degrees and it snowed almost a foot. For some reason even though it is so warm there is still a lot of snow on the ground so it gives kind of a cooling effect with the warm sun. Colorado definitely has the weirdest weather I've ever seen.

The game magic the gathering involves many cards. These cards are valued through dollars, and the value is derived from the texts on them. Black Lotus is the most expensive. All the cards have art on them, this is my favorite art on one of the cards.

I have decided I would post a little blog about my lovely boys. I have two cats Buster(left) and Boots (right) . My mom breeds Rag dolls, a very loving cuddly breed of cats. When I went to her house when I was looking to get a kitten from her and Buster followed me all over her house. He pretty much picked me. My ex picked out Boots. My boys are so adorable, they follow me around the house and always want to play. Buster can open kennel doors, closet doors, and my bedroom door. Talk about a smart cat. Boots is more the lover of the two, he will purr as soon as someone picks him up and be so content in your arms. They both sleep with me at night taking turns annoying me. Boots will like my face and lay on my chest trying to eat my hair while Buster will try to escape my bedroom while crying just to wake me up. I am such a cat person I can't imagine not having my boys. Practice Post
Food fighting is so fun, but messy at the same time. There are some rules to food fighting. The first time I got into a food fight, I was in elementary. The food was put out late and all the kids were pissed. Once we managed to get the food, we started through it all throughout the cafeteria. Once all the food settled everyone had nasty smell food baked all over them.
